According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety there were 3,571 accidents that were known to involve alcohol on Minnesota roads in 2011. These accidents resulted in 136 deaths and 2,375 injuries. Minnesota laws penalize individuals who operate vehicles under the influence by punishing offenders with jail time, significant fines and other penalties.
Those who have been injured by an individual under the influence of alcohol or another substance, however, are provided little assistance through these criminal proceedings. There can be additional claims associated with drivers who are under the influence. Such claims involve dram shop acts against bars and restaurants for overserving or social host liability for supplying minors with alcohol.
